In years past, China and other countries have been rightfully scrutinized for human rights violations having to do with how their citizens live and work. Thankfully, the further those countries enter into the global marketplace, the more the government and individual employers are forced to pay heed to world opinion concerning rights for workers in the workplace.

Among the many positive changes in recent years has been the creation and subsequent adoption by many countries of what is called “SA8000”. This initiative is a voluntary set of labor standards set up to ensure 'just and decent working conditions' in the work place.
It is based on international workplace norms, such as those captured in the International Labor Organization (ILO) conventions and the UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Convention on Rights of the Child.

While SA8000 is at present a set of voluntary measures intended to establish proper working conditions in all countries, those emerging world trade partners such as China have been particularly affected by the establishment of these guidelines.
Anxious to ensure their validity as a new World trade power, many Chinese are taking these issues very seriously, and are willingly enforcing these standards in order to meet and exceed the expectations of the United States and the World.

We have found clean, orderly facilities, with no child labor evident. As such, the concern for the contentment, comfort, and conditions of the workers in our partner-factories is very personal to all involved. We at Native Sun make clear to all of our trading partners that their compliance and adherence to the SA 8000 standards is important to us and the people we serve. We applaud companies like The Gap for taking such a bold and public stance on conditions/improvement in their vendors' manufacturing facilties. It is an important step.
